Tanlines don't sound anything like where they have come from — Brooklyn, NYC. Initially, Jesse Cohen pogo'ed in dance‑y post‑punk act, Professor Murder, and Eric Emm spent a little time noodling in dissonant 'math‑rock' band, Don Caballero, alongside Battles' Ian Williams. Together the duo make tropical synth pop that's indebted to the roots of dancehall, calypso and the South African dance phenomenon, Kwaito, cladding together a heady blend of heathen rhythm, shimmering guitar phrases and familiar dancefloor elements to their rich, hook‑laden tracks.

Settings is split between instrumental and vocal tracks, and their appeal lies within bold arrangements and distinctive hooks. The duo also realize an ability work in lyrical content that adds a certain charm and unique dynamic — Tanlines have that rare skill of balancing strong pop sensibilities with a good working knowledge of global club music; and it's this perfect balance that makes Settings such an accomplished and, ultimately, an enjoyable listen. With a strong affinity, and heavy appreciation of these dance/pop musical styles, Settings functions perfectly as a potent, lest we forget fun, introduction to their sound.
