From early on, Elizabeth has been known as the band that exists outside the indie rock orthodoxy. Something about this Vancouver, BC quartet's unabashed embrace of great English songwriting and vocal rejection of the trendy trappings of contemporary indie dogma (read: whiney vocals and chintzy synths) raises the ire of the self‑appointed keepers of cool. Fitting, then, that Elizabeth's debut album should bear the name First Excommunications.

While most bands are indistinguishable in both name and sound these days, Elizabeth are focused internally, on the raw power and genuine expression that got them pegged as the band to watch. On First Excommunications, the band effectively dispatches the naysayers, dispenses with simplistic comparisons and fulfills the promise of their 2004 Blick EP with 11 sharp tracks that transcend the influences and flat out rock.

The band's kinetic sound and take no prisoners live show has placed them onstage alongside the likes of The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Metric, and TV on the Radio. They have also been invited on tours with Hot Hot Heat, Death From Above 1979 and Controller.Controller.

In 2005, following triumphant festival performances at Pop Montreal and North By Northeast (where David Johansen of The New York Dolls was in attendance) the band unleashed the EP that solidified them as one of Vancouver's most promising, and most contentious, bands. The buzz on Elizabeth reached a crescendo in 2006, when the band's performance at New Music West earned them the title of «Best of the Fest» from CBC Radio 3.
