Bachelorette is the solo delivery vehicle for New Zealand based home recording tinkerer Annabel Alpers.

Annabel's music career started out venting Christchurch teen frustration in a «beginner indie» band called Mouse. Fortunately, things soon got better. She graduated to keys, guitars and vocals in the much underrated Hawaii Five‑O, who were popular in Christchurch for their psychedelic surf sounds and country tinged old school rock‚n‚roll. Highlights for the band were supporting Stereolab at the Lumiere Theatre and some memorable shows in Auckland and Dunedin. They recorded an album that they never got around to releasing, and won the award for best unreleased single at the '99 b‑net awards. While in Hawaii Five‑O, Annabel also made appearances as organist and guitarist in underground noise specialists Space dust and the Hiss Explosion respectively.

Following the demise of Hawaii Five‑O Annabel traveled around Asia, living for some time in Shanghai, China, where she decided to shift to Auckland to spend time making music. At Auckland University she gained access to recording studios, and in combination with her own home studio, and the studio of Marcus and Nik from the Undercurrents, she pieced together her own unique and – up until now – private sound.

Bachelorette features a collection of vintage synthesisers, drum machines, real drums, bass, guitars and whatever else is lying around on the bedroom floor that day. In the end it comes out as some kind of weird vocal layered electro synth pop – with a hint of country thrown in for good measure. The resulting sound is as if Peaches and Patsy Riggir had a bastard child and put it on LSD and downers.

These days Bachelorette is getting out of the bedroom and enjoying some solo performances with her prerecorded self. As Annabel says; «that's what Bachelorette's all about – playing with yourself»

Bachelorette envisions herself surrounded by her computer ‘musicians’; her songs “often start simply and spiral outward like cotton candy in the making.” Bachelorette’s music was originally crafted with thrift-store found instruments, resulting in her songs described variously as "cosmic folk”, "sci-folk”, "computer folk" or "tech-folk", or a “lo-fi, one-woman version of Animal Collective.”

Chosen as 'one of ten artists to watch in 2009', Chicago-based online rag Dusted Magazine jump-started an international buzz – six months before the release of her worldwide-debut. (www.dustedmagazine.com/features/801). Her fans include Animal Collective, Beach House, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, with whom she has extensively toured.

Bachelorette has released four albums to date: The End of Things (2005), Isolation Loops (2007), My Electric Family (2009) and the self-titled Bachelorette (2011). Drag City re-released the The End of Things and Isolation Loops on vinyl LP in October, 2010.

The End of Things (Particle Tracks) is Bachelorette’s debut seven-track EP, her first foray into solo recording after completing her degree in music composition from Auckland University. Alpers wrote the parts for guitars, keys, vocals and harmonies, programmed the drum machine, ultimately creating a “perfectly-crafted synth-pop release.” New Zealand Musician remarked “Overall this is a simply amazing debut.”

2007 saw the follow-up to TEOT with Isolation Loops, the product of Alpers’ sequestered writing and recording process, tucked away in her grandfather’s rustic cabin in the shadows of New Zealand’s Canterbury Alps.

Mojo called 2009’s My Electric Family “a real treasure”; Pitchfork comments “when Alpers folds herself into the electronic process, the results are delicious, even ecstatic,” and LA Weekly states that Bachelorette’s music is “as bright and transcendent as it is detailed and personal.”

During the week of May 16th, 2011, Bachelorette' third full-length album, self-titled 'Bachelorette'. was internationally released.
